Prickly pears

The tradition of prickly pears in Sicily is deeply rooted in the culture of the island

and dates back several centuries.

Prickly pears, also known as "opuntia", are typical fruits of the arid and desert areas of Mexico and Central America, but they were introduced in Europe

by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century.

They have become an integral symbol of Sicilian popular and culinary tradition and are consumed during the summer, when the hot, dry climate favors the ripening of the fruits. Their pulp, which is sweet and juicy, is usually eaten after removing

the thorny rind.

Their bright colours, given by the contrast of the green with its red, yellow or fuchsia fruits, make them a much loved subject to be reproduced in the form of furnishing objects, pictorial decorations of ceramics and handcrafted jewellery.
